Amanda White: Gadget and App Recommendations Interviews Amanda White

Amanda White

Social media:

Wednesday is quickly becoming my favorite day of the week. I love Gadget and App day here at How They Blog and our bloggers have shared some incredible resources over the past few weeks. Today is no exception.

If you like photo editing and creation apps, you are going to LOVE Amanda’s list of favorites. I spent a good portion of my life linking to all of these. Good, good stuff. But before we dive into Amanda’s gadget and app recommendations, let’s take a look at her workspace:

Amanda’s Workspace

I don’t have a dedicated workstation. I just tote my laptop around everywhere–the couch, the kitchen table, the school/playroom and even my #hellomornings “mom cave” located in my closet.

Amanda’s Gadget and App recommendations

1. What computer do you use? (i.e. MacBook Air)
MacBook Pro

2. What kind of phone do you have? (i.e.Samsung Galaxy III)
iPhone 4

3. Do you use a tablet? If so, what model? (i.e. iPad 4)

4. What blog platform do you use? (WordPress, Blogger, Typepad etc)

5. If applicable, what blog theme/child theme do you use? (Genesis, Thesis, WooThemes etc.) Or feel free to use this space to give a shout out to your designer.

6. What web hosting company do you use? Do you recommend them?
HostGator. They have a quick online tech help chat but I have had many many problems with my blog being shut down because they say I’ve got too much traffic. Believe me when I say that is not the case. I’m always wanting to change hosts but am too afraid unless someone is holding my hand.

7. How do you capture your blog ideas? (Notebook, Evernote, Word, Sticky notes etc.)
Apps? On my phone? They have apps for that?

I love to take pictures of things to remind me what I want to write about. Also, sticky notes, backs of receipts and a little notebook by my bedside table. I also write post ideas in my post calendar in my WordPress dashboard.

8. What are your most useful phone/tablet apps?
I have been paring down the amount of programs/apps I use because for me (as a wannabe productivity and app geek), I end up using things that I don’t really know how to use and waste time because of it. I just listened to Michael Hyatt’s podcast about his toolbox which included all the programs/hardware/apps he used and I had no idea most of them even existed. *sigh*

I’m just gonna kick it old school and say that a timer is my best friend. I use a to stay focused on writing, emails, etc.  The pomodoro setting is my fave.

I do have a few time-saving plug-ins for my blog: Editorial Calendar and Templates.

And I do use Dropbox and Google Drive for sharing files.

Clearly I’m sub-technical.

iPhone Apps:
Recently, I’ve deleted most my apps from my phone to add a little quiet to my life. So, no more Facebook or Hootsuite apps. I also deleted all entertainment apps. The only thing I still use is Instagram (I can’t quit!). So, I have lots of photo apps to play with:

Phonto, BubbleFrame, Labelbox, Tweegram, Boldomatic, PicLab, Instaquote, Snapseed, Big Lens, PhotoMagic, DblCam, BokehCamFX. It’s a sickness, really.

The other apps I use regularly:

Bible (it’s just so quick!), RetailMeNot (coupons for every just about everywhere), AppsGoneFree (alerts of limited time free apps for iPhone & iPad), Kindle, Dropbox and Dice (what? We use it when playing games for school!).

8. What other tech do you use? (Camera for photos, mic for podcasting…etc.)
I have a Nikon D80 for taking pictures. Again, I’m under-qualified to be using it but I have recently discovered it’s quicker to pose and take my own pictures for my blog than scour the internet for a free (or even costly) photo.

I also have several external hard drives. I take too many pictures and my laptop gets bogged down.

  1. I need to use an egg timer! Great tip!

  2. I loved hearing that someone else uses sticky notes and random notebooks to keep track of ideas. I’ve tried using different apps but they just didn’t jive or I didn’t spend enough figuring out how to use them.
    Great post!

    • That little notebook by my bed is invaluable. I’ve written whole outlines of posts in it late at night when I didn’t wanna get out of bed. 😉

  3. I’m addicted to photo apps, too. Photos are really important to me for my blog, so if I don’t have one that I feel is worthy of it (channeling “Wayne’s World”–“we’re not worthy!!!”), I use a photo app to make it more interesting. My current favorite is Etchings for iPad.

  4. I am curious as to why you use the Mac book Pro Air. I have noticed other bloggers use that too. I am new to Apple products, so why that and not a non-apple laptop? thanks for your tips.

  5. How cool…I’d been wanting to setup templates for my blog, but didn’t know how. I’m not sure why it never dawned on me to look for a plugin. Thanks for sharing!
