A How They Blog Interview with Ruth Schwenk

Ruth is a professional. I got to spend a good bit of time with Ruth last Fall at a small retreat we both attended and then as roommates at Allume. I’ve seen her in action working on a post late at night or quickly checking in with her contributors to make sure they have everything they need. She has a plan and sticks to it – and this is 90% of the secret to success at anything.

Of course, she’s also fantastically fun and wise. I know you’re going to enjoy getting to know her this week!

1. Give us a quick intro to you, your family and your blog.
ruth-schwenk-familyHi! I’m Ruth Schwenk and I am married to my best friend and love of my life, Patrick. We have been married for fifteen years and currently have four children ages four to eleven. We love serving in ministry, spending time together as a family, reading, drinking lots of coffee, and resting in God’s grace.

I am the creator and editor of The Better Mom, a contributor blog with over 35 writers. At The Better Mom our mission is to build God-honoring homes by inspiring moms to be better moms through sharing life and learning together.

My husband and I have also just recently launched a brand new site, For the Family. It is also a contributor site focused on encouraging and inspiring families to build God-honoring homes for the glory of God.

2. Tell us your blogging story.
Several years ago I felt God was calling me into a “mom ministry”. It was unclear to me where it was that I was supposed to serve, so I spent the following 1-2 years praying about it. I began to read a blog by my friend and college roommate, Joy Forney. It was from her blog that I began to read others and pretty soon I had an idea swirling in my brain. Although I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, I connected with Sarah Mae, who gave me some pointers to get started and from there I learned all that I could. Step by step I prepared for the launch of my site.

3. Tell us about a blogging “success” or “failure” that taught you a powerful lesson.
Blogging has taught me that anything is possible. I had no idea what I was doing, but God planted a calling in my mind and heart and I followed through. Persistence, patience, and prayer are so important.

4. What are the intangibles that have helped you succeed?
Determination- (Chutzpah) Building a blog/site/brand is HARD work. It takes time and it takes consistency day after day.

Perspective – For me, I continually remind myself and our community that none of this exists because of a person. We give all glory to God.

Character – This is a big deal to me. It is two-fold. 1. I believe the messages we post on our online space are messages we are held accountable for. When we write we must be careful to write with integrity and discernment. 2. In our online friendships with other bloggers we must be honest and true.

Planning – This goes hand in hand with determination. Planning everything from social media to blog series to book launches is crucial.

Supportive Husband – He is my cheerleader and built in pastor/editor/writer. I am so thankful for him. We have now launched a site together, For the Family.
