Kat Lee: Gadget and App Recommendations

(I, Kat, would like to preface this post with the fact that I’m something of a gadget and app nerd. I love technology and would rather shop for apps than shoes. Hence, lots of app recommendations here…and I’m only scratching the surface. #nerd)

What computer do you use? (i.e. MacBook Air)
MacBook Air 11 Inch – I love this computer. It is ridiculously fast because of the SSD Harddrive and it is small enough that I can easily fit it in my purse when I head to the coffee shop.

My Mac buying tip: If you’re buying a Mac product, I highly recommend checking out their refurbished page on their website. I buy almost all my Mac products there and have never had a single issue. In fact, I still have an old iPod Classic that is probably a good 9 years old that we use every day that I bought refurbished. You can save quite a bit of money buying refurbished. They have the exact same warranty as a new item too.

1. What kind of phone do you have? (i.e.Samsung Galaxy III)
iPhone 4s 16gb – I don’t buy my iphones refurbished simply because I get them through the cell carrier.

2. Do you use a tablet? If so, what model? (i.e. iPad 4)
iPad 3 16gb

3. What blog platform do you use? (WordPress, Blogger, Typepad etc)
WordPress

4. If applicable, what blog theme/child theme do you use? (Genesis, Thesis, WooThemes etc.) Or feel free to use this space to give a shout out to your designer.
Genesis with the Prose child theme designed by Erin at Design by Insight

5. What web hosting company do you use? Do you recommend them?
I’ve used Media Temple for many years and love them. They are a little pricier, but they’ve handled every traffic surge I’ve had without any problems. I also have a few small sites hosted on Blue Host. I haven’t been with them as long, but things have been pretty pretty seamless there too.

Apps

6. What app do you use to write your posts?
I keep all my posts in Evernote, but I don’t like to write in the app. I’m weird and need to write in a very distraction free area. So, I’ll either write in Byword, or in AwesomeNote which is an iPad app that syncs with Evernote. They also have an iPhone app.

7. How do you capture your blog ideas? (Notebook, Evernote, Word, Sticky notes etc.)
Evernote using the Drafts IOS app

8. What are your most useful computer/web apps?
Safari, Mail, Evernote, Garageband (for podcasting), Alfred (for launching apps and finding things),
Basecamp – a web app where I keep all my blog projects organized
Workflowy – a web outliner where I prep all my speeches

9. What are your most useful phone/tablet apps?
AwesomeNote – I use it as a to do app for simple and miscellaneous tasks. I also keep my journal and my blog writing there.
Drafts – I start all my writing here and then send it whereever it needs to go – either an email, Twitter, Evernote etc.
Agenda – It’s a really simple, pretty calendar app. They also have an iPad app.
Instagram – I love instagram
Over – it’s an app that allows you to put text on photos
Camera+ – a kicked up photo taking app
Notability – for when I want to use my stylus and handwrite stuff
Bible – I love, love, love the YouVersion Bible app
Feedly – for keeping up with blogs
Tweetbot – for keeping up with Twitter

10. What other tech do you use? (Camera for photos, mic for podcasting…etc.)
I use a Blue Yeti microphone for podcasting and Panasonic RPDJS400W
headphones. I look like a dork when I’m recording with this massive mic and gangsta headphones, but that’s why it’s a podcast and not a vlog.

  1. Wow! This confirms how new I am to the whole blog world. I have so much to learn…This was really great information. Thank you!

  2. Kat, I’m really enjoying your new blog. It is so fun and informative! I guess I should have talked to you before buying a new computer. I thought about a mac, but I was nervous about change. So, I went with an Acer ultrabook. It’s not bad, but I find it a little slow.

    • Tereasa,
Oh, it’s no fun to spend all that money on technology and then be disappointed. I’m so sorry about that. If you have any questions about Macs before your next purchase, feel free to ask away!

  3. All of these apps look amazing. I can’t get over Drafts! How cool is that?

It’s funny that you, Stephanie, and Tsh use a Mac! That’s definitely on my wishlist.

    • Stacy,
I’m not sure when you checked out Drafts, but just yesterday or the day before they released a new version that’s even more amazing. You can archive and save notes as well as organize all your actions. It’s my new favorite app on my phone.

  4. Kat,
Just getting a chance to load some of these apps and I love the idea of OVER, but I cannot get it to work well on my Ipad. Have you had similar glitches? It keeps locking up.
