Ruth Schwenk on Social Media and Writing

1. How do you keep social media from running your life? Is it a struggle for you? Any social media management tips?

Oh I LOVE talking about Social Media! 🙂 Social media does not have to run your life. It is soooo important for your site, but you can put it to work for you without having it eat you alive!

I recommend putting together a rough schedule of when posts need to be up at different social media sites. For example: How many times on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. every day. Once you have schedule set for what is best, write it down in ink and pre-schedule your posts.

Once everything is pre-scheduled you can actually enjoy social media because you aren’t always worried that you forgot to post something. You will be able to hop on your facebook page whenever you get a chance, instead of RIGHT NOW because it is 10:00 am and that is the highest traffic time! ha!

2. What is your writing process? When do you write? How long does it take you to create a post?

ruth-schwenk-daughterWriting is grueling for me. I love to speak and really dis-like writing. I don’t have a specific time I write, but I do find very early in the morning or very late at night are the best times for me. Depending on how “inspired” I feel to write the post, it could take between 1-2 hours.

3. Do you have a blogging mentor or accountability group (formal or informal)? How have you created and fostered those relationships?

From the very beginning (before I had a blog), I just reached out and asked for help. I have continued to do that with my blogging journey. The only way to learn is to find the information. I would suggest looking for someone online that you really look up to as far as their site and blogging journey goes, and ask to talk with them.

Yes I do have a few groups that I am a part of that have also been a huge help for me as well.

4. What is the best blogging advice you have received? (OR) What is the best blogging advice you could give?

I would say if you want to blog, you must put your heart and soul into whatever the mission of your site is. What is your vision? What is your mission? Make sure it is something you are sold out for and go for it!

Come back Friday she’ll share her gadget and app recommendations. Stay tuned!
